We have come to find ourselves in a world of illusions.

The ninth stage production of the Fox & Beggar Theater, “Greenwoode” tells the story of a knight-errant and her horse as they journey home through a fairy-haunted wood on the Eve of May. The show utilizes illuminated cut paper, homemade crankies, and intricate shadow puppetry to tell its dark fairy tale, inspired by Celtic folk art and accompanied by a live score written and performed by Summoning Circle (Bloomington, IN).

 

“Greenwoode” runs approximately 70 minutes and is suitable for all-ages, with a simple story that explores a complex question— how do we hold onto ourselves and each other when we can no longer trust what is real and what is artificial?

 

In April 2026, four musicians convened in the northwoods of Wisconsin to draft a musical roadmap for the “Greenwoode” project. This winter, artists Rebecca Mellstrom (Minneapolis MN) and Nyssa Collins (Knoxville TN) will draw and cut out hundreds of original illustrations, which puppeteers will use to visually animate the story on a giant handmade shadow screen.
